ULTRA HIGHT PERFORMANCE CONCRETE (UHPC) – ADVANCED IN STEEL BRIDGE REPAIRS (for Thang Long Bridge (Hanoi, Vietnam)

The renovation of the Thang Long Bridge in Hanoi, Vietnam which was built in 1985 of a century work of Soviet-Vietnam relations is going to complete in 2020

Overall inspection of the bridge shows that the main platform and the 14mm thickness of steel bridge surface still ensure bearing capacity, have not appeared damaged. However, according to standards, the design of the bridge plate from the 1980s can’t adapt the strength requirements, leading to the partial sagging of the bridge surface, which was not suitable for the load and vehicle flow. It is necessary for repairing the surface of Thang Long Bridge to increase the hardness of the bridge surface, ensure the adhesion between the bridge surface and the coating, waterproof, and prevent water stagnation of the bridge surface.

The renovation of steel surface bridge is become lightweight conjugated bridge surface by scraping the layer of bridge, welding 5cm long anchor nails using fast plasma welding technology (0.17 seconds) in order to cause denaturation of Steel material. After that, the employing place the wire mesh and pour Ultra High Performance Concrete (UHPC) with lowest strength usually 120Mpa, 60 mm thickness. During the process, Thang Long Bridge will be shielded from rain, sun, and ensure concrete temperature. Thus, the anchor nails and the wire mesh will be able to fix the UHPC bridge surface which high content of metal fiber reinforcement, good deformation resistance. Therefore, it will prevent the phenomenon of concrete slipping with the bridge surface in the solution of coating asphalt concrete on the steel deck as before.
